Students Honored at ODK Leadership Awards Ceremony

Trivette Award Winners Dewvaul "DQ" Tracy IV '23 and Elisabeth Waldron '23 with President Lindgren and Proctor Trivette

海角乱伦专区鈥檚 Alpha Lambda Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), a national leadership honor society, recognized superior scholarship, leadership, and exemplary character at its annual Leadership Awards ceremony Monday.

Dewvaul 鈥淒Q鈥 Tracy IV 鈥23 and Elisabeth Waldron 鈥23 were each honored with the Janet Harvey Trivette 鈥78 & W. Proctor Harvey, Jr. Endowed Student Award. The award was established in 2007 to honor alumna Janet Harvey Trivette 鈥78 and her brother W. Proctor Harvey, Jr. and celebrate their distinctive characteristics of compassion, generosity of spirit, and leadership.

Tracy, a political science major, has served as both the risk management and service chair for his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, as well as a significant mentor to fellow students as a resident assistant during his sophomore and junior years. He has served on the Student Conduct Board during his entire career at RMC. Tracy was also a member of the Franklin Debating Society that won 鈥淭he Big Debate鈥 against Hampden-Sydney this past fall.

Grant Azdell, vice president of student affairs and dean of students, quoted Tracy鈥檚 nominator as he presented the award, saying, 鈥淎nyone that knows him can vouch for his superior service to others. He is the prime example of a person who does acts of service out of the kindness of his heart.鈥

Waldron, an accounting major, works to empower others as the vice president of For Women and the secretary of the Black Cultural Society, and volunteers with SERVE and Habitat for Humanity. She has also worked as a pharmacy technician at Bon Secours St. Mary鈥檚 Hospital for the past two years, in addition to her campus job with RMC鈥檚 Office of Advancement over the last four years.

In presenting the award to Waldron, Azdell noted, 鈥淗er nominator hit the nail on the head when she concluded that this student鈥檚 鈥榡oyous approach to life and making the world better for all makes her an ideal candidate for this award. There is no task she sees as beneath her; she is willing to get dirty to make life better for others.鈥欌

Sullivan Award winners Faith Gizara '23 and Nicholas Chaturia '23 with President Lindgren

Nicholas Chaturia 鈥23 received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award and Faith Gizara 鈥23 received the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award in recognition of spiritual qualities applied to daily living. The awards are supported by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation and honor the lives of the foundation founder and his wife. Recipients receive a bronze medallion.

Chaturia is a criminology and biology double major with membership in the honor societies for each discipline. He serves as a tutor for three different subject areas and was previously the treasurer of the International Interest Group. President Robert R. Lindgren commended Chaturia as 鈥渁n intelligent scholar鈥 that possesses the 鈥渘obility of character as characterized by the Sullivan Award.鈥

Gizara is an English major with a minor in secondary education, working in the classroom with English language learners. She previously served as vice president of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega and is a small group coordinator for InterVarsity. Gizara is also a member of the Spanish Club, Young Life, and the Student Virginia Education Association. Lindgren quoted her nominator, saying 鈥渉er personality, commitment to excellence, and positive attitude are qualities that make her an asset in all service-oriented positions.鈥

The RMC charter of ODK was founded in 1933. Membership is awarded to elected undergraduate juniors and seniors whose cumulative grade point average places them in the top 35% of the RMC student population. Candidates must also demonstrate leadership in at least one of the five phases of campus life to be selected: scholarship; athletics; campus community service, social and religious activities, and campus government; journalism, speech, and the mass media; and creative and performing arts.
